Thomas W. Timm has been building fine custom furniture, doing architectural millwork, selling hardwoods, and teaching woodworking classes in his shop in Summerville, SC for 24 years. He received superior instruction in school including six years of woodworking shop, drafting, metal shop and art classes. He learned by watching and by doing.
Tom uses powerful woodworking equipment with the distinct touches of a craftsman. His shop capabilities include a 52" wide belt sander, 30" helical head planer, two edge flat joiner, two lathes, three shapers, as well as a variety of hand tools.
Tom uses hardwoods such as cherry, mahogany, black walnut, oak and maple that are stacked to the ceiling in the 9,000 square foot lumber shed. His inventory includes more than 15,000 board feet of fine, kiln dried hardwoods from which he selects each board based on color, grain, and symmetry. Then in his shop each piece is cut, shaped, assembled, and sanded to perfection and the final coats of hand rubbed finish are applied.
Tom's most popular pieces are pencil post beds, dining room tables, raised-panel blanket chests, and entertainment centers/wardrobes. He can design a custom piece, build from existing drawings or sketches, or from a picture if necessary. He favors book matching techniques which provide stunning grain patterns in tabletops, door panels and drawer fronts.
Tom Timm believes in doing a job right or not at all. He puts his heart and soul into his woodworking business. He believes that the better he knows a customer the better he can design and build a personalized creation. The craftsmanship will last many lifetimes as cherished heirlooms.
Tom teaches woodworking classes twice a year in 15-week courses. The reserved-space classes include hands-on instruction as the student builds a piece of fine furniture from start to finish. The result is a family heirloom to be, with special significance since it was built by Mom, Dad or grandparent.
